Search SEA. Formula Fun. Think through the entire process before you start. Get your substrate ready and only then start your epoxy resin mix. Epoxy resin mix, application, and clean-up should always be the last step in the process as it requires the most attention.
On high-gloss surfaces be sure to sand the surface with minimum grit to ensure good mechanical adhesion. And always remember to clean the surface thoroughly, before mixing the epoxy resin. Clean your new brush using tape sticky side before mixing your epoxy.
This will remove any loose fibers from your brush and require less clean-up before the epoxy kicks. If sanding is required, then a standard chip brush will work fine.
For finish coats, use a better brush.
Warm resin wets out better and cures faster. Avoid storing your epoxy and hardeners in very cold temperatures, this will change the viscosity of the resin. If necessary, warm your epoxy resin by storing it above a heater. Hardener, on the other hand, should always be maintained at room temperature as heating uncured hardener can cause amberization. Avoid applying epoxy resins for laminating and hot-coating outside in cold temperatures, on surfaces with condensation or high-humidity days.
For faster kicks let the epoxy resin mix sit for a few minutes before pouring. As the mixture heats, the curing times will accelerate. This is a good trick for laminating vertical surfaces where running or dripping is a concern, or if you are applying in less than ideal temperatures. If heat is an issue, try using a slower kicking resin or slow down the kicking process using ice-packs wrapped in a zip-lock bag to cool the resin system.
This is a common trick for installing components where a void is to be filled using epoxy. Do not allow quantities larger than 3 ounces to kick in the pot, this can cause an exothermic reaction which will off-gas. Note: Cured epoxy waste is not considered hazardous materials.
Un-kicked resin and hardener should be disposed of properly. Consider spreading a very thin layer of mixed epoxy with a squeegee first and then smoothing out the finish using a brush.

Great question! I am new to this whole thing and I have questions haha. When you pour the resin into your mold and you have a laminated picture, how do you get it into your project?
Once it is poured do you just lay it on top and it will stick or if you glue it how do you keep the glue from showing and when do you glue it? I have just bought products to make coasters with kids pictures in them.

Also, what type items can I use for molds? We need around for Vacation Bible School projects? I need a very cheap mold to do a coaster or possibly something along that size? Personally I would not use a resin project for children. When using a laminated picture, trim the lamination away close to the picture edge, but not right on it. This little bit of a border will still keep your picture sealed and keep the resin from creeping in, but will still be clear invisible in your casting.
How to Avoid Trapping Bubbles in Epoxy Resin
Do you want the picture to be on top of your finished casting? If you are pouring into a mold with the idea that you will pop the resin out and the part touching the inside of the mold will be the top, then you will want to pour and add your pictures in face down.
I know this comment sounds confusing. And she's going to explain how to get rid of the little buggers AND how to prevent them in the first place. One word Tape is your best defense in the fight against drips! Take THAT, drips!
FYI - we love using a product called Tuck Tape, found in the insulation aisle of your local hardware store. It's waterproof, non-porous, has good stick and peels off easily! You can definitely use good old fashioned painter's tape too, but since it's a little more porous, the resin may soak in and under the tape.
With either tape, your best bet is to pull off that sucker at the 24hr mark - much easier to pull off before it has fully bonded! Let us know in the comments below!!

Professional artists and manufacturers pour epoxy resin over their finished products to give them a secure, glossy, and expert-grade final look.
One problem I run into a lot during all of my epoxy projects is the persistence of so-called 'epoxy bubbles'. Any air that gets trapped in your resin after it has dried can often ruin the appearance and quality of your finished work.
However, I've learned that there is a simple solution to avoiding this. I've written a handy guide to help you get bubbles out of epoxy resin in just a few seconds flat. Before we cover how to get rid of bubbles in Epoxy, it is important that you have the right tools and materials at the ready. For my project, I only needed a few things to ensure my artwork had a flawless, bubble-free finish.
Here's what you will need:. Make sure to place the piece you are working on atop a covered surface so that you don't end up spilling resin on the furniture. Make sure your butane torch is fuelled up and ready to go and that your sealer and resin mixture are within easy reach.
Before applying the epoxy resin, make sure your project is sealed so that no air can escape. Simply use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of sealer over the surface of the dried paint. Leave until it has dried, and you're good to go. My project was an Inkjet print, so I used a standard acrylic sealer from the hardware store.
This step is super important. If your resin is too cold, then you will have trouble getting the bubbles out or ensuring that it will mix properly. For this, you can simply place your resin and hardener in a warm water bath. After a few minutes, the liquids should be at the optimum temperature. Once you have warmed up your resin and hardener, pour them into a cup and mix with your plastic stirrer. You've got to do this very slowly as mixing too quickly can create more bubbles in the mixture.
Now it's time to pour the resin mixture on top of the surface you're working on. I made sure to pour slowly and very closely to the surface. If you pour from a height, you'll get an uneven distribution of resin and chances are you'll create extra epoxy bubbles.Periodic cleaning of the coils can eliminate the problem that causes a Frigidaire to run continously. When your kids start making jokes about chasing after your refrigerator because it runs all the time, take a closer look at your Frigidaire to determine what's going on.
Mechanical or electrical problems usually don't cause your refrigerator to keep running, as these problems typically result in the refrigerator failing altogether.
Some easy and quick fixes can help you determine the problem with your Frigidaire. A refrigerator's motor starts and stops based on the temperature control inside the refrigerator or freezer.
If you have it set to the coldest setting, your Frigidaire might run continuously. To keep food from spoiling, verify the temperature in the refrigerator stays between 35 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Purchase a refrigerator thermometer at any store that sells household appliances. Monitor the temperature control setting against the thermometer setting to determine if this corrects the problem.
Another factor that contributes to a continually running refrigerator starts with the people in your house. When someone stands with the refrigerator door open, the cold air inside the refrigerator is exchanged for the warm air in the room. A refrigerator door left slightly ajar creates the same issue. Both problems cause the refrigerator's motor to continue chugging along to reach the temperature requirements of the thermostat setting, even after the door is closed.
When the weather turns hot inside and out, your Frigidaire runs more often to maintain the temperatures inside it. It is normal for your refrigerator to run more often under warmer weather conditions. It should return to normal operating modes when the weather evens out. You make your refrigerator work harder when you place warm or hot foods inside it.
Place leftovers into covered storage bowls, and let them cool on the countertop first before putting them into the refrigerator; avoid leaving them overnight on the counter, as bacteria can grow in the food. The refrigerator has to work harder when you place hot or warm foods inside it. The refrigerator gasket along the outer edge of the door loses its magnetic or suction quality over time. When it begins to dry out, crack or even break, warm air gets inside the refrigerator, which makes it continually run to keep the temperature at the correct setting.
You can replace the gasket by lifting up the bottom flaps to locate the small bolts that hold it in place. Home improvement stores and appliance outlets usually sell replacement gaskets. It takes less than a half-hour to remove and replace a gasket. Periodically pull your refrigerator away from the wall to vacuum the dust behind it, and on the compressor and condenser coils, depending on your refrigerator's components.
Use the vacuum attachment that allows you to reach between cracks and crevices. The condenser has to work harder when it's dirty because the heat of the motor stays trapped by the dust. Periodic cleaning of your refrigerator's interior and exterior components keep it operating at peak efficiency.
Power interruptions cause your refrigerator to quit working and increase the temperatures. During a power outage, avoid opening the refrigerator or freezer as much as possible so it retains the cold inside the refrigerator.In the past I have used duct tape to create a frame but it does not come out to my liking. Does anyone have other ideas on how to create a better boarder? The best way, albeit messy, is to let the epoxy flow over the edge and the excess will drip to what ever is below hopefully some type of drop cloth or other disposable material.
If the table top is wood, consider sealing the edges with a sealer diluted white glue works great-very thin coat.
When it drys there will be numerous "nodes" on the underside-where everyone puts there chewing gum. You can leave the nodes there, I prefer to remove them. I use a dremel tool with a sanding drum to remove them. Some folks put a thick coat of furniture paste wax on the underside to prevent the epoxy from adhering. I have finished many tables this way. Your mileage may vary depending on what you are using for the coating.
Without knowing the shape of the table; or it's substance; OR the thickness of the clear coat; you might try a flexible; vinyl type molding. The problem will be in removal after the fact; no matter what you use; as the epoxy will want to adhere to anything. Perhaps the molding with duct tape on it then attached to the table. ROUND tables will be a bit more problematic. If you can resolve the framing; after the fact you can sand smooth and use a jewlers rouge on a buffing wheel to finish the edge.
This method worked fairly well for me. Then I used a rough wood file to "knock down" the edges since I used masking tape like you did. It took some elbow grease since I had some pretty nasty edges. Following this I used fine grit sand paper to smooth the edge to a nice round edge.
How to Prevent Gas Bubbles in Epoxy Resin
If you scratch the surface by accident don't worry the next step can fix it. To finish things, since the sanding leaves an unsightly opaque appearence to the epoxy, you'll need to mix up one last small batch of epoxy. Using a small paint brush like one of those paint by number kid sized paint your epoxy along the sanded edge. Use a toothpick to smooth small amounts of epoxy into any accidental scratches you made while sanding or filing.
As long as you haven't used too much epoxy while painting it on you'll have a nicer finish. If you're not planning on pouring very thick you'll save time by using the spill over method. If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
